Pitch conditions dramatically affect performance. A spinner-friendly pitch at Chepauk means picking 3-4 spinners; a pace-friendly wicket at Perth means loading up on fast bowlers.
- Check the pitch report on Cricbuzz or ESPNcricinfo before team selection
- Look at the last 5 matches at that venue — what kind of scores were typical?
- T20s on flat pitches: prioritize batsmen and power-hit specialists
- Tests on green wickets: pace bowlers will score heavily
Tip 2: Captain Selection Is the Most Important Decision
Your captain earns 2× all fantasy points. A 150-run innings from your captain gives you 166 points instead of 83. Getting the captain right is the single biggest differentiator between winners and losers.
- Pick a batsman who is in form AND has a good head-to-head record against the bowlers
- Avoid the "obvious" captain pick in mega contests — too much overlap with other teams
- Consider an all-rounder as captain — they can score on both bat AND bowl
- For Head-to-Head (1v1) contests: go with the safe, consistent star
Tip 3: Use "Differential" Picks for Mega Contests
In mega contests with lakhs of teams, picking only popular players means everyone has the same team. If your "safe" captain scores 60 runs, everyone scores the same — nobody wins big.
Pick 1-2 differential players (picked by fewer than 20% of teams) who you believe will outperform. When they do, your team shoots up the leaderboard.
Tip 4: The All-Rounder Rule
All-rounders score points from both batting AND bowling. A proper all-rounder (like a Hardik Pandya or Ravindra Jadeja type) is often undervalued in terms of fantasy credit relative to their potential output. Always try to include 2 quality all-rounders.
Tip 5: Avoid Injured or Doubtful Players
A player who scores 0 because they didn't play is the worst outcome. Check team announcements 30 minutes before match start. Dream11 allows team edits until the match begins — use this window.
Tip 6: Managing Multiple Teams
Many experienced players create multiple teams with different captain/VC combinations. For a big match, you might create:
- Team 1: Safe captain, stable core squad
- Team 2: Differential captain, 2-3 surprise picks
- Team 3: All-in on a specific batting lineup if pitch is flat
Tip 7: Bankroll Management
Fantasy cricket is skill-based but unpredictable. Never spend more than you can afford to lose. Set a weekly budget and stick to it. Use Dream11's free practice contests to test strategies before playing for real money.
